View available framebuffer codes

I've never had much luck using the framebuffer codes from tables available online when configuring my kernel parameters (eg. "vga="). To view the actual codes available on your system you can do the following

On Debian/Ubuntu:
# aptitude install hwinfo
# hwinfo --framebuffer

I believe hwinfo is available in OpenSuSE (it's a SuSE tool) as well, but I don't know how to obtain it for other distributions. You could probably find and download theOpenSuSE source rpm package and use that to build it if you can't find a native package.
